Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within our patients. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.
We are usually able to obtain ultrasound images quickly, and without sedation. The procedure is non invasive and not painful, so most of our patients tolerate it without additional stress.
Ultrasound does not necessarily replace radiographs (Xrays), but is a complimentary diagnostic tool that helps us get a more complete view of what is going on inside our patients.
There are many conditions which can only be diagnosed with the help of ultrasound, so having this diagnostic tool available allows us to provide the best care for our patients.
